The Property
Unique Beach House on Tankerton Beach in Whitstable
The Artists' Beach House is a detached weather-boarded house built in 1906. Opening its front door onto Tankerton Beach, the property is spectacularly situated in a quiet corner of the attractive and fashionable fishing port of Whitstable on the North Kent coast.
Inside
- Style: The beach house has been sensitively modernised keeping the original tongue and groove in the kitchen and all the original arts and crafts detailing throughout including the carved settles by the open fireplace and the galleried staircase. The beach colours used reflect the environment outside. Inside the house are collected treasures, books and art works including the recently commissioned 'swimmers' mosaic in the bathroom.
- Bedrooms: Upstairs there are two double and a twin bedroom; downstairs another double bedroom and a study with comfy double sofa bed. All share an upstairs family bathroom, downstairs loo and outdoor 'shower with a view'.
- For relaxation: On sunny days enjoy the 180º sea views from the sofa on the wrap-around deck or oysters on the beach. If the wind picks up retreat to the fire inside or commune in the spacious kitchen.
- For recreation: Digest the stack of art books, set up the easel and set to inspired, as WM Turner was, by the seascapes and sunsets. Or just relax on the deck as the sea laps beneath.
- Practicalities: Washing machine, tumble dryer, washing line, clothes pegs.
Outside
On a private sea road with a unique outlook, the house is set above the beach in wild woodland gardens. The property has a veranda and decking where you can enjoy Whitstable Natives (the local oysters) and barbecue the sea bass you've caught off 'The Street' the promontory below or collected from the harbour as you admire stunning sunsets across the Thames estuary. After your swims, or for a change of scene, there is the outdoor shower with a view for you to set up wherever the fancy takes you.
Please note; the garden is sloped and some areas are overgrown, there are also a number of steps located around the exterior of the property.
Food and wine
- DIY: Available on a self-catered basis, the kitchen is fully equipped and has a Smallbone Classical Kitchen in keeping with the original tongue and groove finish. Whitstable and Tankerton, both 10 minutes walk from the house, have excellent green grocers and butchers. Both have small supermarkets and Whitstable delicatessens, chocolatiers, gelateria and of course its famous fish market and West Whelks at the harbour and Wheelers' fish counter in town.
- In-house cuisine: Arrive to breakfast ingredients. Local top chefs can prepare and deliver meals and fully cater events if required.
- Eating out: Whitstable is famous for its world class eateries. These include one of the 'UK's top 10 greats': Wheelers' Oyster Bar (01227 273311) (The Independent Summer 07); JoJos (4/5 in The Good Food Guide); Spectacularly located Whitstable Oyster Fishery Co and The Pearsons' Arms on the beach; and The Crab and Winkle and The East Quay Restaurant in the harbour; The jewels in Shepherd Neame local brewers crown: and The Dove at Dargate.
